Tortoise shell and ebony were both among the most precious and coveted materials of the 17th century. The Flemish and Dutch ebonized wood, a dark stained or blackened wood, and is typically designed in a style characteristic of Dutch furniture making, often featuring intricate carvings and detailed moldings, usually dating back to the 17th or 18th century, and are used to their utmost effect in this exceptionally rare looking glass.
