Presented in this lot is a Late 17th Century Louis XIII Carved Walnut Side Table with Single Drawer and Barley-Twist Base. In the late 17th century, the spiral forms became a popular feature in furniture, particularly as legs and column decorations in English, French and Dutch pieces. The decoration also became known as “barley sugar twists” due to its similarity with the candy sweet of this era. The furniture of the Louis XIII period was typically massive and solidly built, characterized by carving and turning (shaping on a lathe). Common decorative motifs found on it include cherubs, ornate scrollwork, cartouches (ornamental frames), fruit-and-flower swags. This French side table features a rectangular planked top with a single front drawer, simple turned wood knob pull. It is raised on an exquisite base, made of four barley-twist legs, typical of the Louis XIII era, connected to one another with an "H" style barley twist cross stretcher, centre barley twist vertical support. The curvy, sinuous lines of the turned base, discreetly accented by the rectangular block joints, contrast beautifully with the simplicity of the top, creating a perfectly harmonious vision. With its elegant silhouette and rich patina, this 17th century walnut side table will bring an authentic touch to any home, from a bedroom to a living room. Table is in very nice condition consistent with age and use. Measures 28.5"W x 43.875"L x 30"H and weighs 85 pounds.
