This is a Thomas Jefferson Peace and Friendship Native American Indian Peace medal dated 1801. The medal is 76mm and shows a silver construction. The reverse of the medal shows the "Peace and Friendship" wording with a tomahawk and peace pipe crossed over top of a clothed hand and unclothed hand shaking. The reverse shoes the left Indian's hand pointing at the "F" in "Friendship" indicative of being from an original die. The obverse reads “Th. Jefferson President of the U.S. A.D. 1801” The Indian peace medals were distributed to Indian tribe Chief’s by the U.S. Government as a part of diplomatic relations. The metal is 3 inches or 76mm in diameter and the necklace is 28” strung.
