For your consideration is a Rare 1849 edition of "Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak" or "Black Hawk and Scenes in the West" by Elbert H. Smith, published by the author. This rare book is an epic poem about the life and military career of the Sauk war chief Black Hawk (1767–1838) and the Black Hawk War of 1832. The poem focuses on Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak (Black Hawk), a leader of the Sauk tribe. He fought for the British in the War of 1812 and led a group of Sauk and Fox warriors, called the "British Band," against U.S. settlers in 1832 to reclaim ancestral lands in Illinois. This 1849 edition includes lithograph portraits of Black Hawk and General Zachary Taylor. The poem describes the Wisconsin and Lake Superior regions, Native American customs, and historical events like the massacre of Chicago. It is considered the first poetry volume printed in Wisconsin. The green cloth bound gold gilt stampoed illustrated hardcover is in fair to good overall condition, front cover gilt bright, , fading and scuffing observed.
