This is an outstanding, authentic circa 1850-1860 Central Plains fine catlinite pipe and carved wooden stem from the ex-collections of Jim Ritchie (1938-1915) and Erich Erdoes, sold in the famed 2016 Cowan’s Jim Ritchie auction and pictured in Accouterments V by James Johnston. The pipe shows an absolutely beautiful, finely carved catlinite pipestone elbow pipe bowl with vase like bulbous bowl having beautifully carved rings and a unique small cylindrical foot at the base. The pipe is paired with what appears to be the original carved wood stem. The stem shows a grooved, ridged or ring design which consists of bands that are incised / carved into the wood down the entire stem, there are small remnants of red and blue pigment. The end shows a small smoking tip, integral to the wood. Jim Ritchie (1938-2018), noted as being from both Toledo, Ohio and Perrysburg, Ohio, is one of the foremost collectors of 20th to 21st centuries. His collections have been offered by some of the most prominent houses including Cowan’s who sold a triple blade war club from his collection back in 2016 for 107,520 (w/ bp) the Lakota Figural Three-Bladed War Club from the Collection of Jim Ritchie (1938 - 2015), Toledo, Ohio. Provenance: From the Jim Ritchie (1938-1915) Ohio collection and Erich Erdoes Buffalo Tracks an ATADA member (Antique Tribal Art Dealers Association); found to be an authentic 19th-century example by the experts at Cowan’s and sold in their Jim Ritchie Collection auction in 2016, noted as “Great lakes Catlinite Pipe Bowl with Wood Stem from the Collection of Jim Ritchie… 19th Century.”; documented and published / pictured in “Accouterments V 1750-1850 Kentucky Rifles, Pistols, Tomahawks, Knives” by James Johnston 2018.
