For your consideration is this 1860s Civil War Confederate short sword and scabbard made by Nashville Plow Works in Tennessee. Nashville Plow Works, also known as Sharp & Hamilton, beat plows into swords during the early days of the Civil War. The firm was in operation as a weapons manufacturer from 1861 until the Federal capture of Nashville in 1862. During that brief period of time, the firm manufactured a large number of swords for the Confederacy ranging from enlisted men's sabers to staff and field officer's swords. This sword features a steel d-guard handle and solid wood grip. The single edged straight blade is tapered at the end and features the stamped makers mark on the ricasso reading, "Nashville Plow Works". The sword comes in the original black leather scabbard and is stitched on one side to hold it together. The blade and scabbard show wear consistent with its age, with the blade showing a patina throughout and the makers mark worn down. The handle and d-guard are in good condition. The leather scabbard shows wear and cracking in the leather and some ripped stitching towards the bottom but overall in good condition. The sword in the scabbard measures 23 1/4" L. The blade measures 17 3/8" L.
