The lot includes a collection of early notes including an authentic 1862 Confederate States of America $100 note with 1867 document and three other early notes. All of these pieces were discovered in 1998, hidden among the pages of The Robe by Lloyd C. Douglas (first edition) circa 1942. This is an original December 1st, 1862 original authentic Confederate note. This authentic example shows hand written date and serial numbers as well as is hand signed. At the top are slaves hoeing cotton in the field, the bottom left a portrait of John C. Calhoun, to the right a standing woman . There is an orange overprint at the bottom center saying, HUNDRED, in large capitalized letters. Marked on the bottom Keatinge & Ball, Columbia, S.C. This looks to be a well kept high grade example. Below this is a hand written promissory note / check which appears to be marked, “Reid Galsburg No. 7, 1867 of W. 1820 dollars in payment (illegible signatures) with an original United States 2-cent orange George Washington “Bank Check” U.S. Internal Revenue first-issue stamp from the 1860’s. Next shows a 1929 20 Francs banknote issued by Banque de I’lndochine for Noumea (New Caledonia) printed by CL. Serveau FEC and E. Deloche SC. Next shows a 1906-1930 5 Francs banknote from New Caledonia issued by Banque de I’lndo-Chine in Noumea, New Caledonia printed by CH. Walhain FEC. And E. Delouch SC. Lastly is a late-19th century Argentina 1 Peso banknote issued by Republica Argentina (Caja de Vonversion / La Nacion style fractional issue). These were all professionally framed in non-acidic museum matting with anti-glare museum glass with a note that reads, “Discovered in 1998, hidden among the pages of The Robe by L.C. Douglass; upon purchase from the Salvation Army in Santa Monica, California. Measures 24 7/8-inches x 13 7/8-inches.
