This is an Sioux of Dakota captured cavalry sword used during the 1864 General Sully Campaign. The sword has a very old fountain pen written collection note (likely marked in the 19th Century) which is likely marked, “Minor Co. Dakota in 1886 supposed to have been lost while the Army was in pursuit of the Indians during the Sioux outbreak of”. The piece comes with paperwork from The Guns of History which states that the sword was used by the Sioux during General Sully’s 1864 Campaign when he was in pursuit of Sioux Inkpaduta. Yankton Sioux agent, Dr. Burleigh sent forty Indian Police force picking up their trail by the Pipestone Quarries and chasing them West. After capturing fifteen warriors Inkpaduta turned on the force and killed several Indian Police. In a show of defiance Inkpaduta’s third son was carrying a sword and stuck the sword into the ground to indicate that whoever crossed the line would be killed. This was at present day Madison, South Dakota (Inkpaduta: Dakota Leader by Paul N. Beck 2008; Inkpaduta: The Scarlet Point, Terror of the Dakota Frontier and Secret Hero of the Sioux by Maxwell Van Nuys 1998). The sword appears to be a early Mexican Colonial Cavalry Sword captured by the Sioux and used in Dakota during the Sioux Outbreak wars. Paperwork included. Measures 25.5”L. Tip broken off.
