Offered in this lot is a 1871 Ulysses S. Grant Indian Peace Medal. The dies for this medal were engraved by Anthony Paquet. The Ulysses S. Grant Indian Peace Medal shows a new redesign of the reverse. One side displays a portrait of President Grant facing to the right, with a Native American Peace Pipe and an Olive Branch below, and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA LIBERTY JUSTICE AND EQUALITY", “LET US HAVE PEACE”. The design of the reverse is beautiful, though it has little to do with Native American Indians. The reverse side design has a border of Thirty-Six Stars surrounding a Bible, agricultural implements and a globe. Around the outside reads, “ON EARTH PEACE - 1871 - GOOD WILL TOWARD MEN.” This medal design also has the distinction of being the only Indian Peace medal upon which the name of the President does not appear. The medal is hung on a faded blue ribbon. This is a rare 58mm Size Indian Peace Medal. Soon after the original striking many of the "Peace Medals" were re-struck for collectors. This attractive medal has wear and patina from actually having been worn as would be expected. lease closely examine the pictures of the peace metal and determine its originality and age due to your own inspection, we make no claim of age for the peace metal or metal type.
