Featured in this lot is this 1875 of "The Life & Explorations of Dr. Livingstone; Including Extracts From Dr. Livingstone's Last Journal, By Rev. E.A. Manning" by John S. Roberts. The book is decoratively bound in green cloth with gilt decoration and title; contains a tissue-guarded portrait of Dr. Livingstone, illustrated plates and a map of Southern Africa. David Livingstone (1813 - 1873) was a British physician, Congregationalist, and pioneer Christian missionary with the London Missionary Society, an explorer in Africa, and one of the most popular British heroes of the late 19th-century Victorian era. He had a mythical status that operated on a number of interconnected levels: Protestant missionary martyr, working-class "rags-to-riches" inspirational story, scientific investigator and explorer, imperial reformer, anti-slavery crusader, and advocate of commercial and colonial expansion. The condition of this book is good with slight wear to the outside cover and some browning to the pages consistent with the age of the book but otherwise in good overall condition. The measurements of this book are 7 1/2" x 5 1/4" x 1 1/4".
