Featured in this lot is an 1885-1886 First Edition copies Vol. I & II Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant by Major General Ulysses S. Grant himself. The piece was published in 1885 by Charles L. Webster & Company New York and pressed by J. J. Little & Co., Nos. 10 to 20 Astor Place, New York. The piece shows a brown cloth and leather cover with bold gold stamped lettering and seal. The book is a fascinating read with a rare fold-out of the terms of surrender given to Robert E. Lee. Volume I shows an eye catching etching of Grant as a young soldier with Volume II having a portrait of the more well known image of President U.S. Grant. These memoirs were written from the Fall of 1884 and completed only four days before Grant's death on July 23, 1885. The set was published by Grant's friend, Samuel Clemmons, better know as Mark Twain, under the alias of his nephew, Charles L. Webster. Overall, this set is a rare and excellent collection. Volume I, after the title page, features what appears to be a hand written note by Grant himself (etching or print). The condition of this set is fair-good, with damage and slight repair to the spine of Volume II but still retaining stiffness. Covers have wear and tear from the books' vintage age and the pages have been preserved well. The measurements of the books are 9 1/2 " x 6 1/2 ".*
