Featured in this lot is a First Edition of "Memoirs Of Robert E. Lee", by A. L. Long, 1886, publisher J. M. Stoddart & Company. This book includes memoirs of Robert E. Lee's military and personal history, embracing a large amount of information hitherto unpublished and including incidents relating to his private life subsequent to the war. It was only during the last years of his life that General Lee seriously contemplated writing a history of his campaigns. He had been repeatedly urged to do so by friends, was offered large inducements by publishers, and even from foreign countries came urgent requests for his story. Lee was overtaken by death before he could complete his design of writing and publishing to the world his personal narrative of the important events in which he figured; he died less than a decade after the end of the Civil War. Though supports write that he intended to publish his memoirs, he did not have the chance. Gen, A. L. Long took on the task for him in this volume. In the selection of General Long as the writer, these Memoirs become as nearly an autobiography as any it would be possible to obtain from another hand than that of General Lee himself. Armistead Lindsay Long (1825-1891) was a brigadier general for the Confederate States of America and became an author later in life. The green cloth bound gold gilt hardcover is in fair condition, scuffing and staining exhibited to covers, loose boards at spine. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing. Measures 6.5"W x 9.75"L x 2.25"D, weight is 3lb, 4oz.
