Featured in this lot we have a Colt lightning slide action rifle chambered in .38-40 caliber. This rifle was manufactured by Colt in 1886 with the Lightning rifle in production from 1884-1904 making this a 3rd year production rifle. The lightning rifle was the first pump or slide action rimfire rifle offered by Colt. The rifle came in three frame sizes with a caliber range from .22 all the way up to .50-95 express. The rifle was primarily used for sport and hunting use with some personal ones reportedly used in the Spanish American War. The piece displays a 25 1/2" long barrel, pump action, walnut stock, trigger guard, and blue'd finish. The top of the barrel is marked "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG.CO. HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A. ELLIOT'S PATENTS MAY 29. 1883. SEPT. 18. 1883.". Mechanically the rifle shows good condition with a smooth action and crisp trigger. The piece shows good condition with most of the finish remaining with only minor wear due to use and age. This rifle weighs 7lbs 10oz. Serial Number: 12798.
