Presented in this lot is an Original 1890s Fred Garrison / Garrison Bros. Ute Cabinet Card. The photograph shows a Ute Indian man in Western clothes. The Ute people are the oldest continuous residents of Colorado, with a history spanning thousands of years in the Rocky Mountains. The Utes are the only tribe in Colorado with no migration story, considering themselves the original inhabitants of the region. They are known for the Bear Dance, traditional beadwork, basketry, and a deep, spiritual connection to the land and mountains. Fred L. Garrison (1867–1940s) was a prominent early photographer in Rifle, Colorado, whose work captured the development of the American West during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Garrison opened his photo studio in Rifle in 1898 after traveling by railroad and stagecoach. The studio, which became a local landmark for half a century, was often known as "Garrison Bros." due to a brief partnership with his brother Orson.
