The lot features an original circa 1898 Ledger Page from the same collection as the Statement of Blemmingham ledger book with original Northern Plains ledger art. The page shows a graphite and colored pencil ledger art from the Northern Plains, likely Sioux showing four Buffalo Bison skulls with red painted eyes, one at each corner, galloping horse at the center with headdress wearing warrior or chief. The horse has an orange color and a lightning strike down the neck, shield at the belly, and red hand at the back with red striped painted feet along with two feathers at the tail. The Indian atop of horse is wearing a feather headdress bonnet. Below the horse is a rattle snake (rattlesnake) in graphite. On the back of the ledger art is additional graphite ledger drawings showing a warrior war shield, corn husk, pinwheel, feather, buffalo bison track, arrows, and more along with a signature of Frank Grarh (or Grsrh, Grarln, Grarl). The ledger has nice foxing and discoloration around the edges from early age. The piece is from the Blemmingham Ledger book, the very same as the 1871 Example that sold in our September 2021 sale for $1,107 (shown with bp). The ledger sheet measures 12” by 7 3/8”.
