This is a fabulous late-18th century to early 19th century French bone / tusk inlaid Rosewood cigar humidor box / desktop gentleman’s box from a fine French collection. The box is inlaid with bone / tusk and scrimshaw carved with the intials .J.M.C. .CHASE. With a five-point star. Chase, being an old French name for “to hunt”, “to chase” or “chasser”. This box shows a rosewood construction and is accented with intricately cut bone inlays along the edges and corners, secured with small brass tacks / nails. The engraved bone nameplate on the lid is hand-inked with black and red lettering reading, "J.M.C. Chace". Around the edges of the lid are diamond shaped bone inlays going around the entirety of the top of the lid. The front shows a key hole but no key is included. With its aged patina, nice grain patterns and solid construction, this piece is a great functional storage box. The piece shows good condition overall with wear present from its age and use over the years, but no signs of damage noted. No key included. It measures 6 1/4" L x 9 3/8" W x 4 3/4" H and weighs 2 pounds and 4 ounces.
