This is an exceptional late-18th century to early-19th century Early Great Lakes Tomahawk from the ex-John Baldwin collection pictured in his 1999 book, "Tomahawks / Pipe Axes of the American Frontier". The head exhibits a blacksmith hand forged spontoon kite-shaped blade or diamond shape blade with a double edge and median ridge running down the center of both sides. The club has a tear drop eye-let hole. The blade is forged with the metal being folded around the eye and folded back on blade itself with the forge weld being visible. The head is secured to the shaft with two forged iron wedges. The handle has a tapering round handle with interesting diamond like pommel carved end. Provenance: From the ex-John Baldwin collection pictured and/or mentioned in his 1999 book, "Tomahawks / Pipe Axes of the American Frontier"; also pictured / documented in the book, "Rare American Indian Weapons: Tomahawks, War Clubs and Knives" by M. Francis. The head has nice, deep patina and overall the weapon is well kept. Measures overall 19.25-inches long, the head is 8 3/8-inches long.
