For your consideration is a Rare Late 18th Century French Provincial Louis XV Walnut Bombe Shaped Commode. The eighteenth century is considered the Golden age of French furniture. It was during this time that the most refined and beautiful Royal furniture was made in the busy Paris workshops of Europe's elite cabinet makers. Two-board serpentine top and front, two drawers having extensive, fine carving over an elaborate carved and shaped acanthus leaves skirt apron with pierced cartouche with dentil design typical of Provence, Arles region, stands on cabriole legs decorated with acanthus leaves at the shoulder ending with escargot feet, with acanthus leaves carved at the top. Scrolled Bombe side panels, two front carved Bombe molded drawers with hand-carved acanthus leaves, scalloped shaped top beveled and molded Dupont edge, hand-cast detailed drawer pulls and matching escutcheons hardware. The curved forms, lightness, grace, comfort and asymmetry of this period replaced the more formal, boxlike and massive furniture of the Louis XIV style. Excellent quality with superb craftsmanship, the commode is in wonderfully preserved condition, insect damage to backboards, some splits, scratches and minor fading to two-board top, nicely finished. Measures 24"D x 48.75"W x 34.75"H and weighs 120 pounds.
