This is an exceptional, scarce and important 18th-Century American Indian Revolutionary War period presentation grade brass and silver engraved pipe tomahawk from an ex-Museum East Coast collection. This fourth-quarter-1700’s piece is a truly extraordinary example showing a fancier high grade with highly engraved head, silver end cap, silver bands, and tiger maple haft, a masterpiece of American Indian weaponry. The head is brass with a forged iron inset / insert dovetailed blade bit and the entire body is covered with hand engravings showing flowers, vines and pitcher plants in typical late-1700’s form. The entire blade shows side notch cut engravings and the tear drop eye, which is held into place with a silver cap shows a punch dot engraved design along the entire front and diamond like floral engraving on both sides. There are filed moldings and a unique vase like diamond faceted bowl. The head is on a highly figured fancy tigers maple haft handle which shows German Silver inlaid bands and an inlaid German silver fleur-de-lis which is on both sides and engraved as well as further accepted by tack spots. The striped tigers maple handle shows the band at the head, two bands at the central area and an artful smoking end showing a band with diagonal inlays and a silver pewter smoking tip. The pipe is in very good well-kept condition, the head was cleaned by a former collector of dark corrosion many years ago but a mellow patina still is present. The haft shows a dark coloring with shiny patina and the silver a nice dull mellow patina as well. Minimal overall wear from honest age and use, truly a wonderful authentic example. Provenance: From an ex-Museum East Coast collection where the piece was proudly on display. The pipe was noted as being collected from the Iroquois of upper New York State from the museum. Measures overall 18.25-inches in length, the head is 6.5-inches long. Examples of 1700’s Presentation Pipe Tomahawks with brass and engraving are exceedingly rare and highly sought after. For reference see the following: French Presentation Pipe Tomahawk sold by Morphy Auctions in 2017 for $31,250, the Eastern Woodlands Presentation Pipe Tomahawk c. 1800 Guthman sold by Heritage in 2025 for $23,400, the Brass Pipe Tomahawk with inset metal blade and no engraving sold by Morphy Auctions in 2020 for $16,640 and of course the 18th-Century Pipe Tomahawk ex-Guthman sold by NAAC in May 2026 for $78,000. Also see the Presentation Pipe Tomahawk sold by Cowan’s in 2019 with a $60,000 estimation with similar tigers maple inlaid with silver bands and a highly engraved head. Another similar example of presentation “Vine Hawk” weapons with a red tiger maple haft and German Silver bands sold at Cowan’s years ago.
