This is an original iconographic oil painting dating to circa 1789 which is marked as Virgen de Copacabana of the province Omasuyosa in devotion to Miguel Antonio Ferreyra. The work is marked “Vro. (V. ro) Rto. DE Nitra (accent over the “r”). Senora (accent over “n”) de Copacava na dela Prov. De Omasuyos (accent over “a”) devocion de Miguel Antonio Ferreyra Anode (accent over “n”) 1789.” This roughly translates to “Vro. Rto De Nitra Lady of Copacava in the province of Omasuyosa devotion of Miguel Antonio Ferreyra Anode 1789”. This work is similar in its 18th Century age and reference to the Nuestra Señora de Copacabana as the Anonymous Peruvian School painting sold by Christies on July 30, 2020 for $250,000. The piece presumably shows Miguel Antonio Ferreyra, a likely Spanish man of religion giving praise to the Virgen de Copacabana circa 1789. Notably in the history of Bolivia, just around the time this painting was made, circa 1780, a great rebellion took place led by Túpac Amaru II, a Spanish speaking Native American. Approximately 60,000 Native American’s in the Peruvian and Bolivian Andes rallied to the cause. This painting dates to the beginning of this rebellion, possibly made to persuade or appease in the contrary. An interesting and quite amazing piece. This piece was preserved and re-stretched onto a mid-20th-century canvas frame, being partially restore at the edges and put into an antique gilt wood frame (frame shows some chipping). Provenance: From the Henry and Jean Sjaardema Art Collection. The canvas itself measures 21.25” x 14.5” and the frame is 27” x 19.75”. It is similar in markings, but significantly earlier than the Joaquin Castanon titled: "La Virgen De Copacabana" iconographic painting from Akiba Galleries, valued at $10,000 to $20,000.*
