The lot features a unique forged metal axe head with wood handle attributed to the early- to mid-1900’s. The piece shows a round eyelet hole with hammer poll of a bird effigy figure in full dimension. The blade is an unusual, very dramatic fantail blade, which connects at the eyelet hole in a very small spot. The blade has various hammer and forge marks, along with grind marks. The rounded tapering wood handle shows a flat spot just down from the head that appears to be carved with words, which are not identifiable. The haft ends in a small tin cap. This was likely a trading post, reservation, or rendezvous piece. Measures overall 17.5”L with a head that is 4.25”L and a blade that is 3.25”L.
