For your consideration is this American Mutoscope & Biograph Company stereo view movie from 1904, directed by O.R. Hermanek titled, "The Chinese Laundry". The mutoscope is an early motion picture device, invented by W. K. L. Dickson and Herman Casler and later patented by Herman Casler on November 21st, 1894. It did not project on a screen and provided viewing to only one person at a time. The Biograph Company, also known as the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company, was a motion picture company founded in 1895 and active until 1916. It was the first company in the United States devoted entirely to film production and exhibition , and for two decades was one of the most prolific, releasing over 3000 short films and 12 featured films. This film shows a man dressed as a Chinese man working in a laundry shop. When a woman enters the shop, the man falls in love instantly and tries to swoon the woman. The woman wants nothing to do with the man and ends his pursuits by shoving him into his wash basin and leaving the store. The film is only 15 cards long. The stereo view cards feature the director, the company, the title of the film, the order of the cards and is numbered, "126" on the top of the cards. The back of the cards are stamped, "O. R. Hermanek". The cards show good condition with no signs of obvious damage, only some marks and slight staining to the borders. The cards measure 3 1/2" L x 7" W.
