Featured in this lot is this 1905 first edition "Intentions" essays by Oscar Wilde. Oscar Wilde’s Intentions (1891) is a collection of four essays—“The Critic as Artist,” “The Decay of Lying,” “Pen, Pencil and Poison,” and “The Truth of Masks”—in which Wilde explores aesthetics, criticism, and the role of art in society. These essays form a defense of art for art’s sake, opposing the moralistic and utilitarian views of art prevalent in Victorian England. Wilde argues that art should not imitate life, but rather that life imitates art, emphasizing the imaginative and transformative power of artistic creation over realism or didacticism. The condition of this book is well preserved with some wear to the cloth wrapped cover with some wear to the corners and the spine of the book with some browning to the pages consistent with age. The measurements of this book is 7 3/4" x 5 1/2". The collective weight of this book is 1lb 7oz.
