Featured in this lot is this 1917 E. Howard Series 7 pocket watch set in a Keystone Watch Case Company 14k white gold filled Extra case. In Boston, Massachusetts, in 1858, Edward Howard and his business partner David P. Davis established the E. Howard Watch Company. E. Howard watches quickly became well known for their exceptional craftsmanship and accuracy. The business put in place rigorous quality control processes to guarantee that every watch that left their factory met the highest requirements. The "Howard Series of Watches," which featured a number of models with various complications, including chronographs, repeaters, and calendars, was first offered by the company in 1861. The "Howard Astronomical Regulator," created in 1888 by the E. Howard Watch Company, became well-known for its exceptional accuracy and was regarded as one of the most precise clocks of its time. The E. Howard Watch Company faced growing competition from other American and Swiss watchmakers despite its reputation for creating high-quality timepieces. Additionally, early 20th-century wristwatch popularity growth presented difficulties for pocket watch makers like E. Howard. The business merged in 1903 with the Keystone Watch Case Company, the Frontier Watch Company, and the Keystone Howard Watch Company to form the "Keystone Howard Watch Company." The "E. Howard" brand of watches was still produced despite the name change. The watch industry was severely impacted by the Great Depression of the 1930s, which contributed to the demise of many watchmakers, including E. Howard. In 1930, the company stopped manufacturing watches. The serial number inscribed alongside the movement is numbered, "1340897" indicating it was made in 1917. The pocket watch is a grade Series 7, 17 jewel, size 12s, 1912 model showing the Arrow and Empty circle variation. The watch features a nickel movement finish, a bridge plate and a double roller. The watch is not railroad graded. The pocket watch is set in a 14k white gold Keystone Extra case with the serial numbers reading, "1529264". The watch is ticking and the hands move. The pocket watch shows good overall condition with the face of the watch showing the most wear and the front glass being cracked, no other signs of obvious damage are noted. The internal components are in good condition as well. The watch measures 1 13/16" in diameter and 2 1/16" in height. The watch weighs 66.1 grams.
