For your consideration is this New Haven Tambour mantel clock with cathedral gong movement, dating from 1920 to 1930s. Incorporated February 7, 1853, the New Haven Clock Company was formed by clockmaker Hiram Camp and others to supply clock movements to the Jerome Manufacturing Company, then the largest clockmaking operation in the world. Three years later, the Jerome firm went bankrupt and in April of 1856 the New Haven Clock Company raised an additional $20,000 and purchased the Jerome operation. By 1860, the firm employed 300 men and 15 women and was producing about 170,000 clocks a year. The small door on the back of the clock opens to reveal the inner workings of the clock. On the inside of the door it reads "Cathedral Gong Movement" and gives a description on how to set the time, adjust it and care for your clock. The inner workings appear to be in working order, but the chimes have not been tested for functionality. The front of the clock features a two hand movement and is protected by a glass case. There are two winding holes present but the key is missing. The clock is housed in a tambour shaped mahogany box with small inlays on the front for some design and contrast. Overall the clock is in good condition considering its vintage age. The clock shows no signs of obvious damage to the housing or the inner workings. The chimes have not been tested for functionality. The clock measures 9 1/4" L x 19 1/2" W x 4 1/2" D.
