Featured in this lot is this beautiful, N. Porter Saddle And Harness Company saddle from the 1920-30s. Newton Porter was born in St. Louis, Missouri and was left an orphan by the American Civil War. Newton learned to build saddles from a St. Louis Saddlery. He later opened his first saddle shop in 1875 in Taylor, Texas. Newton Established the N. Porter Saddle and Harness Company in Phoenix, Arizona 1895. His sons carried on the business after his death in 1925. The Porter saddles were widely known throughout the West. This saddle shows a sturdy construction with a large seat. It shows beautiful hand tooled floral designs throughout the seat, the seat rise, the horn, the pommel (swell), jockey seat and skirt. Both fenders are hand tooled with bronc riders and feature tooled, leather covered stirrups. The brand stamp can be seen on the seat rise reading, "N. Porter Phoneix, Ariz" and also on the billet keeper. On the rear left back housing (backside) it is marked with the serial number reading, "13949". Six sterling conchos are present on the saddle, with three on each side as well as three sterling conchos on the leather stirrup coverings. It shows good condition overall with slight wear present from its age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. It measures 28 1/4" L x 24" W x 19 1/2" H with a seat measurement of 13 1/2. It has a total weight of 41 pounds.
