For your consideration is a 1925 edition of “Cowboys North and South” by Will James, Charles Scribner's Sons New York London publisher. This is a profusely illustrated copy with illustrations by the author. The book is a firsthand story telling of the author’s experience at cow camp and working the range as a cowboy. Will James' first book is a series of short stories about cowboy life in the real and actual West as it truly was between the 1870's and the early years of the 20th century. It showcases James's talent for capturing the life-style and picturesque vernacular of the American cowboy. These stories, in colorful words and striking illustrations, portrayed the true working West rather than the Hollywood variety. All of the eight short stories in the book were previously printed in magazines. Seven of them appeared first in Scribner's Magazine and the last one was printed in “The Saturday Evening Post" (Frazier). William Roderick James (1892-1942) was a Canadian-American artist and writer of the American West. He is known for writing Smoky the Cowhorse, for which he won the 1927 Newbery Medal, and numerous "cowboy" stories for adults and children. His artwork, which predominantly involved cowboy and rodeo scenes, followed "in the tradition of Charles Russell, and much of it was used to illustrate his books. In 1992, he was inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners of the Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. The grey cloth bound stamped illustrated hardcover is in fair to good condition, slight scuffing and fading noted. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing. The measurements of this book are 7W" x 9.5"L x 1"D, weight 1lb, 1oz.
