Featured in this lot is this 1929 First Edition of "The Raven A Biography of Sam Houston" by Marquis James, illustrated, Bobbs-Merrill Company publishers. Samuel Houston (1793 – 1863) was an American general and statesman who played a prominent role in the Texas Revolution. He served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas and was one of the first two individuals to represent Texas in the United States Senate. He also served as the sixth governor of Tennessee and the seventh governor of Texas, the only individual to be elected governor of two different states in the United States. As a teenager, Houston ran away from home, spending about three years living with the Cherokee Indians of Tennessee, learning the Cherokee language, becoming known as Colonneh, meaning "the Raven," which in Cherokee lore fights an evil spirit to save the Corn Spirit, thereby ensuring a bountiful harvest. He appreciated the free and unsophisticated spiritual expression of the Native Americans. These experiences helped shape his character and gave him skills that aided him while serving in the military and as a leader. The red cloth bound gold gilt stamped hardcover is in nice condition, slight scuffing and fading exhibited on cover and edges. Intact deckled pages exhibit age tanning. Measures 6"W x 8.75"L x 1.25"D, weight 1lb, 6oz.
