Featured in this lot are these two hand carved wood fishing decoys circa 1930s-50s mimicking a brown trout and a rainbow trout. Fish spearing decoys were primarily used when ice fishing with spears, but were also used in normal fishing to attract fish to already placed baited lines. These decoys show a wood construction for the body and and metal constructed fins. The first decoy is a brown trout and shows colors of light red and brown with speckles of black throughout. The eyes are glass and the bottom has been carved out, filled with lead and covered with wood to keep the decoy upright in the water. There is a small metal loop above the gills for attaching fishing line. The decoy shows good condition with some slight wear from its use and age but is still in good working or display condition. It measures 9 1/8" L x 2 1/2" W x 1 5/8" H. The second decoy is a rainbow trout and shows colors of blue, yellow, red, beige and brown with an intricately painted design on the top and sides of the decoy. They eyes have been painted on in light yellow and black paint. The fins show an orange/beige color and are constructed of metal. The top of the decoy near the gills shows a small metal hoop for threading fishing line through. the bottom has been carved out, filled with lead and covered with wood again to keep the decoy upright in the water. The decoy shows good condition with some fading and wear to the paint but is still in good working or display condition. It measures 7 3/8" L x 2 5/8" W x 1 5/8" H.
