Presented in this lot is a unique and vintage Haynes Yellowstone Park Studio photograph of an armed posse, circa 1930. The 1920s and 1930s were a time of rising crime, driven at first by Prohibition and then after its repeal, taking on a life of its own. The 1930s was a period of famous gangsters such as John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, Bonnie and Clyde, Pretty Boy Floyd, Machine Gun Kelly, and Ma Barker. An amazing piece of Montana history, this photograph shows fourteen (14) men, 10 sporting coats and ties, armed with rifles in Montana, Sheriff Frank Metzel of Madison County Montana, sitting in the middle front row with his left shoulder holstered revolver poking out from his jacket. The Dillon Tribune newspaper article of October 31, 1930, states this posse was formed to seek and arrest the perpetrators responsible for the Harrison State Bank robbery in Harrison, Montana October 27, 1930. The posse had been formed prior to the robbery based on information obtained by an undercover agent for the bank. Sadly, Sheriff Metzel was accidentally shot by a local citizen who believed the sheriff was part of the robbery team. The sheriff subsequently died enroute to the hospital. Haynes Studio is known worldwide as the original official photographers (1881-1962) for Yellowstone National Park, with locations in Yellowstone Park as well as Bozeman, Montana and Moorhead, Minnesota. This photograph is in exceptionally fine condition, very minimal age tanning noted, no foxing or other obvious marring either. Measures 9.75"W x 11.75"L
