Featured in this lot is this 1930s Railway Express porcelain enamel sign. In 1918, during World War I, the American government founded the American Railway Express Company, at the same time that it took control of the country's railroads. The domestic express operations and assets of the four largest express carriers in the country—Wells Fargo & Company, Southern Express Company, Adams & Company, and American Express Company—were taken over and combined into a public corporation. In contrast to the return of the railways after the war, the domestic express businesses remained under the control of the American Railway Express Company. But on December 7, 1928, 86 railroads across the country came together to form Railway Express Agency, Inc., which in 1929 acquired the American Railway Express Company and went on to run the express business under private ownership. The sign shows a forest green background with tan lettering outlined in green and orange colors reading, "Railway" on the first sign and "Express" on the second sign. This lot is missing the third sign that reads, "Agency". The signs show good condition with some slight wear from their vintage age and use but no signs of obvious damage present. The larger piece measures 5" L x 35 1/2" W, while the smaller one measures 4" L x 30 1/4" W.
