Featured in this lot is this 1940-50s Greenlee beveled chisel made in Rockford, Illinois. Robert and Ralph Greenlee established a hardware and specialty tool store in Rockford, Illinois, in 1862, marking the beginning of Greenlee's history. Initially operating under the name Greenlee Brothers & Co., the business specialized in producing and offering agricultural industry-related tools. The Greenlee brothers grew their product line over time and started serving the developing electrical and construction markets. Early in the 20th century, Greenlee focused more on making hand tools for carpenters and electricians. The business became well-known for its superb craftsmanship and dedication to creating robust and dependable tools. Particularly Greenlee chisels gained widespread acclaim for their accuracy and superiority. Midway through the 20th century, Greenlee grew both its business and its selection of goods. The business introduced cutting-edge tools and apparatus, such as hydraulic and cable pulling tools, electrical test equipment, and knockout punches. Greenlee's dedication to innovation and addressing the demands of experts in various industries has contributed to the company's status as a top tool manufacturer. Greenlee's corporate structure and ownership have changed over time. It was absorbed by a number of businesses, including Textron and Emerson Electric Company. These changes gave the business the chance to use more resources and broaden its market reach internationally. Greenlee continues to produce premium tools, such as its renowned chisels in Rockford, Illinois. The first chisel shows a beveled edge and still shows the hand-forged markings on the chisel itself. Stamped on the top of the chisel it reads, "Rockford, Ill. Greenlee / Made In U.S.A.". The handle is large and constructed out of wood and shows a slight bend in its construction. The chisel shows good condition overall with only the top of the handle being chipped off. This chisel measures 28 7/8" L x 2 15/16" W.
