This is a fabulous circa 1946-1959 Toadlena / Two Grey Hills rug with the highly sought after Turquoise blue dyed yarn from the Two Grey Hills Trading Post William Leighton; ex-Montana collection and Hindman / Cowan's. The rug exhibits handspun wool with natural and aniline dyes showing an elegant, finely woven rug; central stepped diamond surrounded by triangular anchor points / hooks, and a crenulated border. According to the research by Mark Winter's, Willard Leighton the trader at the Two Grey Hills Trading Post and between circa 1946-1959 asked weavers to incorporate the turquoise blue dyed yarn in their rugs (literature source below). The rug shows a tight weave with handspun wool showing various Navajo lazy lines, variation of some of the colors, fine detail throughout and the rare and highly desired turquoise blue yarn. Rich colors. Provenance: From a Montana private collection; ex-Hindman / Cowan's. Measures overall 66-inches by 44-inches. There are slight signs of soiling in the cream wool area and some staining around the edge. The rug has a tight weave with no wear through obviously visible, no major damage and a clean edge. Literature: Mark Winter, The Master Weavers: Celebrating One Hundred Years of Navajo Textile Artists from the Toadlena/Two Grey Hills Weaving Region, The Historic Toadlena Trading Post, 2011, p. 543. For similar examples of Willard Leighton Two Grey Hills rugs with turquoise blue dyed yarn see the example sold by Santa Fe Art Auction in August 2021 for $9,840, the example from March in Montana 2020 with a high of $8,500, and the example at Ripley estimated to upwards of $12,000.
