Featured in this lot is this 1950-60s Northwestern Company 5 cent gumball or candy vending machine manufactured in Morris, Illinois. William and Louis Johnson established the Northwestern Corporation in the early 1900s. In the beginning, Morris, Illinois-based Johnson Brothers produced bicycle rims and other metal goods. They shifted their attention in the 1930s to producing gumball vending machines, which quickly rose to the top of their list of best-selling goods. For many years, the business was still run and owned by the Johnson family, with management roles being filled by several different Johnson family members. Northwestern Corporation is still one of the industry's top producers of vending machines and related goods today. Production of the Northwestern Model 60 gumball machine lasted from the middle of the 1950s to the beginning of the 1960s. It was among Northwestern's most well-liked and productive models. The Model 60 had a traditional design with a metal base that housed the coin mechanism and other functional components and a round or square glass globe that held the gumballs. It was a common choice for use in stores, restaurants, and other public places because it was frequently painted in vivid colors and featured attention-grabbing decals or graphics. The machine shows a white metal base and a clear square glass top with a red metal top. The bottom front shows a textured gold colored metal plate. The front of the glass reads, "Northwestern Morris, Ill." and on the bottom flap it reads, "Northwestern Morris, Illinois". Over the lettering on the glass it has a red and yellow sticker reading, "5¢" in red lettering. The machine shows good condition overall with some wear to the outside paint from years of use and its vintage age. The machine has not been tested for functionality. The machine measures 7 1/2" L x 6 1/2" W x 16" H.
