Featured in this lot is a 1950-1960s "Sandy Horse" coin operated mechanical ride. The ride appears to work. James Otto Hahs created the first mechanical horse in 1931, when he constructed one as a Christmas present for his children. The ride was well-liked by the kids, and he immediately saw the necessity to market his innovation. As the original version's wood-carved horses proved to be excessively heavy, Hahs switched to casting aluminum models. The Hahs Gaited Mechanical Horse was recognized for its design and creation in 1932. By the 1950s, "kiddie rides" were one of the fastest-growing industries in America. This horse shows a green metal base with a black rubber rubber slip mat on top and sheet metal on the front and back end of the base. The horse itself shows a beige base color with a black mane and tail. It has a genuine leather saddle, bridle and martingale and features wood and leather stirrups. On one side of the ride is a green painted coin bank where you pay for the ride. The lettering has been worn off and only shows remnants of yellow paint. The ride is in good working order. The horse shows good condition for its vintage age, but it has areas of worn paint and wear from years of use. The ride measures 72" L x 30 1/2" W x 56 1/4" H.* The ride will function when a small metal coin catch is activated when the door is open.
