Featured in this lot is this Navajo ceremonial healing sand painting collection circa 1950 to 1960's. Each sand painting has a different depiction or pictorial decoration meant to instill power into a healing ceremony popped up by songs and then when the intended healing properties of the paintings have concluded the ceremony the paintings were to be destroyed; each painting has a card with intended outcome and artist that created it. The first is a Yei pictorial and is marked on the back as follows: Sandpainting is used by the Navajo during the ceremony or chant to cure illness - Nattie Yazzie. The second is a mural of a medallion of frog effigy and is marked on the back as follows: Frog - Ceremony is used cure sick person, there is twenty songs to it. After the singing is over, the sand painting is destroyed - Nattie Yazzie. The next sand painting is a mural of dancing Kachina men and is written on the back as follows: Frog - Ceremony is used to cure sick person, there is twenty songs to it. After the singing is over, the sand painting is destroyed. - Nattie Yazzie. The next is a mural of the sun symbol and is written on the back as follows: Sand painting is used by the Navajo during the ceremony or chant to cure illness. - Helen Mclove. The last is also a mural of a frog effigy medallion and is written on the back as follows: Frog - Ceremony is used to cure sick person. There is twenty songs to it, after the singing is over the sand painting is destroyed. - Nattie Yazzie. The condition of these sand paintings is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage and shows a well preserved overall condition. The measurements of these sand paintings is 12" x 12" for each painting. The collective weight of this collection is 7lb 10oz.
