Featured in this lot is this 1956 copy of “Before Barbed Wire” by Mark H. Brown. With 124 original photographs from the renowned American photographer L. A. Huffman, with some taken while mounted, this book is a gem of Montana history. Huffman had firsthand experience with the life that would later be captured on camera. Instead of staged portraits taken for a guest, he preferred to capture working people in the moment because they saw him as one of them. Before he was able to capture the ideal shot, Huffman occasionally rode alongside a roundup or followed a herd of sheep for days. He took full advantage of this excellent opportunity to document the early Plains life. Before there was barbed wire, Huffman managed to capture and preserve the spirit of life on the open ranges of Montana. This book is in good condition, with slight wear to the book cover and spine but no obvious signs of damage are noted. The interior pages are in good condition a well. The book measures 11 1/4" L x 8 5/8" W x 1" D.
