Featured in this lot is this rare, St. Gaudens & Christopher Columbus .999 fine silver coin circa 1961. This coin was issued by the Metal Arts Company Incorporated in Rochester, New York. One side of the coin depicts Christopher Columbus coming ashore, a banner and his crew behind him. This was Saint-Gaudens’ design for the World’s Columbian Exposition, also known as the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. The medal is in honor of Columbus’ arrival in the new world in 1492. The coin reads, "Christopher Columbus Oct-XII MCCCCXCII". The opposite side shows Saint-Gaudens’ home and studio and reads "Augustus Saint-Gaudens MDCCCXLVIII - MCMVII Designer of the most beautiful American coin, the 1907 double eagle. On the obverse, is depicted his magnificent interpretation of the discovery of America" at the top and "ASPET, His Home and Studio in Cornish, NH where he lived and worked, and died which is now kept open to the public as the Saint-Gaudens’ Memorial” on the bottom. This is a rare and sought after piece with low mintage. The coin comes in a box and is set in a red felt mold. The inside of the top lid reads, "The Metal Arts Co., Inc. Rochester, New York". The coin shows good condition overall with no signs of wear or damage present. The coin measures 3" in diameter and 3/16" in thickness. The box measures 4 1/8" L x 4 1/8" W x 9/16" H. The coin weighs 218 grams.
