For your consideration is this 1962 framed original aerial photo of Armstead, Montana before the Clark Dam was started. The photo was taken by Bridenstine. The photo shows an aerial view of Armstead, with the town in the center. The railroad can be seen on the right side of the photo. The smaller mountain range in the top left of the photo would later become the island in the Clark Canyon Reservoir after the dam was completed and the area filled with water. A small town called Armstead, Montana was situated in Beaverhead County in southwest Montana, close to the Idaho border. The town itself was a small, rural community, and the surrounding area was primarily used for farming and ranching before the Clark Canyon Dam was built. Plans to build the Clark Canyon Dam on the Beaverhead River close to Armstead were made in the early 1960s. The dam's construction started in 1961 and was finished in 1964. The Clark Canyon Reservoir, which the dam created, served as a source of water for recreation, flood control, and irrigation. The region underwent significant changes as a result of the dam's construction. The valley upstream of the dam, including the town of Armstead, was flooded as a result of the reservoir's construction. The town was largely abandoned after many of its residents were forced to leave. Armstead is now a ghost town with just a few buildings still standing, such as the old school, a few houses, and a cemetery. The photo shows good condition with no signs of wear or damage. The frame shows a wood construction and is painted a sage green color. The visible photo measures 10 1/2" L x 13 1/2" W. The entire piece measures 14" L x 17" W.
