This is an excellent late 19th-century to early 20th-century Assiniboine beaded medicine pouch from an ex-Montana collection. The piece is stuffed with “The Daily Inter Lake Kalispell, Montana July 25, 1932 newspaper stuffing and is from the Assiniboine of Northern Montana from an ex-Northern Montana collection. The bag is nearly identical in design and styling as the Mrs. Augusta Rankin owned and National Museum of the American Indian Smithsonian collection displayed Assiniboine beaded pouch. The bag exhibits Indian tanned hide thread sewn with old 1800’s glass trade seed beads in a classic Northern Montana Plateau whimsical geometric design. The beads include colors of greasy blue, Cheyenne pink, Cheyenne pink white heart, sky padre light blue, chalk white, greasy green and cobalt. The bag shows a fancy edge along the entire outside and opening in Cheyenne pink white hearts with Indian hide fringes framing the opening and four frilly fringes at the corners. The bag is well kept with soft hide and little to no bead loss. Has darker, later coloring from preservation. Measures overall 6-inches by 4-inches without the fringes.
