This is an interesting tobacco flat bag from the Northern Canadian Native American Indians of the Chippewa / Cree tribes dating to the 19th Century from the Sundog Bruce VanLandingham collection. The top slotted handle can be referred to as a puzzle bag. The bag is comprised of early trade clothe / felt clothe, with Indian tanned hide top fringe strap, red trade clothe border and period 19th Century glass trade seed whimsical beadwork on both sides. The beadwork appears to be trade thread sewn and the bag is an early example. The beadwork shows colors of chalk white in petit beads along with cobalt and semi-transparent red. The outside edge border shows loss and the beadwork field also has some loss, but the bag is still together and displays well. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and acquired by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. Measures 10.5”H by 5.5”W.
