This is an original 19th-century Crow Apsaalooke Buffalo rawhide parfleche drum with Indian Brain Tanned Buffalo hide pounder collected in Montana from the former Sundog Fine Art and Museum Bruce VanLandingham Bozeman, Montana collection and Sarah Alling Helena, Montana collection. The piece exhibits a hollowed-out carved wooden log which is wrapped in Buffalo Bison parfleche rawhide which was wetted and stretched over both sides and sewn with Buffalo Bison rawhide parfleche lacing including the braided handle. This is paired with a wonderful turned and carved wood drum beater / pounder which shows an Indian tanned Buffalo Bison hide head which shows a single old brass trade tack and horsehair adornment. The head is stuffed with old hair and shows sinew sewing with some later repairs in trade thread. Rich patina throughout. Provenance: From the former Sundog Fine Art and Museum collection, from Bruce VanLandingham Bozeman, Montana; former Sarah Alling Helena, Montana collection from their personal family collection, a 5th Generation Montana collection that began in the 1800’s, collected by the family and kept in the family for generations, later being displayed at Sundog and sold directly by the family.
