Featured in this lot is a 19th century Deer Lodge, Montana prison cement "Gardener Boot." The boot is constructed from harness leather and cloth boot strings with a cement sole and an iron plate with a chain hung from the back of the boot. These specific prisoner boots were used as a deterrent for escape and behavior risks; also called "The Oregon Boot" or "Gardener Shackle", they were manufactured by law enforcement and came in different shapes and utilized different equipment. In 1959, Montana State Prisoner, Jerry Myles, was accused of starting a riot for being forced to wear the cement boot. Historians have concluded this method of boot was also used for prisoners working in the brick factories. Similar technology for the cement boot was sold in a auction in 2007 for $7,170.00. The condition of this cement prisoner boot is tattered with wear, tears, and holes to the leather and oxidation to the chain implement on the back of the boot. The measurements of this cement prisoners boot are 11 3/4" x 15" x 5". The collective weight of this boot is 14lb 7oz.*
