The lot features a 19th-Century fully beaded buffalo hide dag knife sheath and knife from the Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux of the Northern Plains from an ex-Museum East Coast collection. The sheath is comprised of Indian brain tanned buffalo bison hide that is sinew sewn with expertly beaded geometric beadwork in typical Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux patterns as well as a row of old brass trade tacks. The beadwork shows all period correct 1800’s glass trade seed beads showing red white heart, greasy light blue, greasy yellow, cobalt, chalk white, greasy pea green. The sheath shows old red stroud trade clothe and frilly Indian brain tanned buffalo hide fringes and belt strap. The sheath is paired with an old-1800’s Southern pattern bowie dagger knife decorated with old brass trade tacks and old silver trade tacks on the handle, likely traded from a Southern Arapaho or Southern Cheyenne to the Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux owner. The belt strap shows old brass trade beads at the top. The piece shows nice patina on the hide from honest age and use and little to no bead loss, being well preserved and showing absolutely stunning, fine beadwork. Provenance: From a Museum in the East Coast where the piece was proudly on display an one of the collections highlights. Sheath has a total length of 19-inches long and the knife is 13-inches in length.
