The lot features an excellent set of whimsical beaded hide and hard sole men’s moccasins dating to the 19th Century from the Kiowa Indians. The set is comprised of thick Great American Bison Buffalo Indian tanned hide which is sinew sewn (sinew-sewn) with hard sole rawhide parfleche bottoms having a rich foot worn patina from honest age and use. The tops exhibit fantastic whimsical geometric beadwork done in all period correct 1800’s glass trade petit and seed cen beads. The beadwork shows colors of Cheyenne pink, greasy yellow, chalk white, red white heart, cobalt, greasy light blue and Czechoslovakian Marcasite metal beads. The moccasins have a medium height ankle with fold over supple soft border and original hide ties down the center. The set is well preserved showing no major damages, tears or rips with little to no bead loss and nice honest patina from age and use. Provenance: Found to be authentic Kiowa 19th Century examples from the experts at Cowan’s and Hindman’s auction. Overall the set measures 11”L across the sole by 6”H ankle when folded up and 4.25” at the widest of the sole.
