Featured in this lot is this antler frame and photogravure with a hunting scene from Ockert's Jagd-Album, a well-known German hunting art series from the 19th century. Franz Hanfstaengl Kunstverlag, Munich, a well-known German fine art publisher recognized for creating superior hunting and wildlife prints, is the publisher of this finely detailed lithograph, "Rehe" (Roe Deer). The artwork features roe deer, an animal closely linked to the European hunting tradition, in a tranquil forest setting. This frame is created from real antler that has been carefully placed to produce a rough and elaborate look reminiscent of the luxurious hunting lodges seen in Austria and Germany. Antler burls that are hand-carved and feature a detailed relief of a standing or running deer adorn the frame. Hunting was both a hobby and a status symbol in the late 1800s, and as an expression of one's love for the sport, artwork such as this was frequently hung in game rooms, hunting cabins, and estates. The piece is a wonderful example of 19th century European hunting artistry. The works of the renowned German art printing company Franz Hanfstaengl are still very sought-after today. It shows good condition overall with slight wear present to the frame and wear present to the photogravure, but no major signs of damage noted. The visible art measures 8 1/4" L x 10 5/8" W, while the entire piece measures 29 3/4" L x 23 1/4" W x 4 1/4" D. It weighs 10 pounds and 14 ounces.
