Featured in this lot is this original Tibetan Mongolian Mahakala mask circa 19th century. The mask features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wooden construction that shows a painted exterior with had carved decoration to the mask. The "Mahakala" Buddhist monastary mask from Tibet; thought, and awareness are "transcended" and one's true self is revealed. Ceremonial Buddhist masks metaphorically echo the same sentiment as they shield the true self from view. This mask comes complete with the Certificate of Authenticity from Butterfields & Butterfields (Bonhams) from 2014, and comes with a book with the exact mask presented in it on page 43. The mask also sold at a Bonhams Auction in 2016 for $5,250.00. The condition of this Tibetan or Mongolian mask is preserved with some wear to the wood and to the paint adorning the mask but otherwise shows preserved overall condition. The measurements of this mask is 13" x 13" x 7 1/2". The collective weight of this mask is 3lb 6oz.
