This is a fabulous 1800’s Missouri War Axe tomahawk attributed to the Osage collected from a family at Pawhuska, Oklahoma from the ex-Ted Levy collection. The head is comprised of blacksmith forged sheet iron with a classic Missouri War Axe flaring triangle blade showing a large weeping heart cut out at the center and a round eye hole. The blade shows some minor corrosion and oxidation on the blade with a dark color, mainly well kept. The piece is paired with a hardwood haft handle with “staircase cut” bottom end, a documented feature on early Missouri War Axe tomahawks from the early to mid 19th-century. The haft is adorned with various brass metal tacked designs, old black paint and varnish. The haft has an old fringe cut drop attached which is adorned with an old thimble, porcupine quill quillwork, small white trade beads, two Black Bear claws, a large Elk Dew claw and a later added 1885 Morgan Silver Dollar tied on. The piece displays beautifully and is a nice example of Missouri War Axe tomahawk. Head measures 8.25-inches in length. Provenance: From the Ted Levy Santa Rosa, California collection.
