19th C. Sioux Bladder Quill Container - Fort Yates

This is an exceedingly rare beaded buffalo bladder quill container both beaded and quilled from the Sioux of the Northern Plains collected from Fort Yates in North Dakota Territory. The piece exhibits a buffalo / bison bladder overlapping with Indian tanned hide trapezoid ends sinew sewn and covered in a geometric tab design having colors of red white heart, greasy green and chalk white. The ends have Indian tanned hide fringes wrapped in porcupine quill quillwork with natural red ocher mineral pigment coloring. The bag has an elliptical shape with the bladder flaps overlapping at least half. The top flap has an old red stroud trade clothe border secured with hoof glue and sinew and adorned with more beadwork. The inside contains a collection of porcupine quills tha thave been dyed blue, red and yellow. These bags are uncommon with this being a well preserved 1800's example with sinew sewing and both quillwork and beadwork. Measures overall 14.5"L by 3.5". The hide is stiff as well are the fringes.
