This is a fantastic beaded and quilled pictorial pip bag from the Sioux Indians dating to the 19th Century from the ex-collection of Sarah Alling, 5th Generation Montanan and co-founder of Sundog Fine Art with Bruce VanLandingham. The bag exhibits an Indian tanned hide construction being sinew sewn with period correct 1800’s glass trade seed cen beads showing an amazing pictorial and geometric pattern. The beadwork shows a horse on each side and overall is done in colors of greasy green, cobalt, greasy yellow, red white hearts, greasy semi-transparent blue, chalk white, faceted metal. The top has a fancy beaded edge as well as two tie fringes being completely wrapped in porcupine quill quillwork with rolled tin jingle cones at the bottom. Beadwork frames the top and side, a traditional pattern, with a large section of bead work at the bottom, one side showing a yellow horse with blue outline and red white and metal beaded saddle, the other side showing a red white heart horse with cobalt and metal beaded accents and semi-transparent blue saddle. Above the large beaded section shows a traditional triple beaded geometric pattern showing a three triangles with line atop showing six rolled tin jingle dangle cones having red dyed horse hair drops. Below the beadwork shows strips of parfleche rawhide being completely wrapped in porcupine quill quillwork having a geometric pattern, the quills being dyed in red, green, purple and natural cream / white. Below the quillwork shows some small beadwork and sinew sewn long frilly hand cut Indian tanned hide fringes having a slightly darked color and slight stiffness from honest age and use. The bag itself shows stiffening from age with some slight bead loss, which exposes the sinew strands, but overall displays well with still soft but stiffening hide and little bead loss being well kept overall.
